A PRIMARY school inspired by a sea of ceramic poppies adorning the walls and grounds at the Tower of London has recreated the scene to raise cash for injured soldiers and veterans.

Arkengarthdale Primary School in Langthwaite is holding a special fortnight of learning about WWI, where they will be hearing from local veterans, writing their own letters from the frontline, and visiting Help for Heroes recovery centre Phoenix House in Catterick Garrison.

Teacher Anna Brown said: “Children have been making the poppies for the last week, and we have made them flow from the roof of the school around the front porch – and it looks stunning.

“We were inspired by the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London, marking the centenary of WWI.

“We have made around 500 ceramic and paper.”

The pupils will be attending the village church on November 11 to commemorate the centenary, and any funds raised by donations from their poppies will go to Phoenix House.

Ms Brown said: “We are having an open afternoon in the week before November 11 where the children will dress up, and writing letters based on what they have learnt about the experiences of men in the trenches.

“When we go to the war memorial we will especially be remembering the eight members of the Dale that were killed in WWI.”
