GRAND National winning jockey Bob Champion has helped a Thirsk couple raise £1,500 for cancer research.
The 65-year-old Guisborough-born racing legend spoke about the Bob Champion Cancer Trust’s work at a party to mark the first anniversary of the Humphrey and Tilly ladieswear store, in Thirsk.
Retired director of the Countryside Alliance John Haigh and his wife, Sue, said more than 130 guests attended the event and bid for a range of raffle prizes donated by local firms.
The couple have raised nearly £25,000 for the charity since Mr Haigh was initially diagnosed with testicular cancer 13 years ago.
He is now recovering from treatment for prostate cancer.
Mrs Haigh said: “The response of people coming to support the event far exceeded our expectations.”
