A NORTH-East MP is welcoming Government support funds for eligible businesses facing rising rates.

Following Parliamentary questions raised by Stockton South MP, Dr Paul Williams, information on the funding and has now been published by the Government after a £300m support package was announced in last year’s budget.

The multi-million pound funding was agreed in a bid to help businesses footing increased business rates with some Stockton companies seeing their rates payable more than doubling in the past 12 months.

Dr Williams said: “Prior to my election, I met with John from NISA on Oxbridge Lane to hear more about his business and his plans and concerns for the future.

“Despite the domination of supermarkets and online shopping trends, convenience stores like John’s remain a vital part of our local communities, particularly for older residents.

“I welcome the progress that is now being made to ensure that businesses like John’s are getting the financial support they deserve to help them cope with these increased bills.”

Dr Williams has also backed the Association of Convenience Stores’ call for a review of the business rates system, to ensure fairness for smaller retailers and other businesses.

James Lowman, chief executive at the Association of Convenience Stores said: “The Government committed to a proper review of the business rates system in its manifesto ahead of the Election.

“Thousands of local shops and other small business are still paying over the odds on their rates bills, and urgent action is now needed to mitigate the impact.”
