ONE of the biggest country shows in the region returns this weekend with a multitude of animal classes, daredevil motorcycle stunts and a host of agricultural attractions.

Stokesley Agricultural Show takes place on September 23 and organisers will hope that it can repeat the success of last year’s event which saw crowds in the region of 20,000 flock to the showfield.

This year marks the 145th annual event and animal enthusiasts can look forward to a packed day of classes covering everything from cattle to goats, sheep and horses, ferrets and poultry plus sheepdog trials and fancy dress.

A packed produce tent will also boast an array of locally-grown and hand baked goods including fruit, veg, preserves and wine.

Meanwhile, a major attraction in the main ring is sure to be the Jason Smyth Adrenalin Tour.

Starring former champion motocross rider - and now a leading stunt rider - Jason Smyth, the daredevil show includes everything from motorbike stunts to quad tricks with hair-raising freestyle jumps 30ft in the air.

Another popular attraction promises to be the North Yorkshire Moors Birds of Prey team who return to the show to give their impressive falconry, owl and hawk display.

Show secretary Janette Hugill is looking forward to another bumper event and is hoping for a dry day.

She said: “You never know what the weather is going to do, but we get a lot of the local farming community come out whatever the weather to be fair.”

Ms Hugill is particularly looking forward to a new addition to the schedule this year with the show debut of the Mid-Wales Axe Racing Team.

They will show off their athletic skills with an array of tools and sawing challenges.

Ms Hugill said: “I am really looking forward to seeing them, it will be something different, they do all sorts of racing and climbing and I think it will be really interesting to watch.”

Ms Hugill added: “Our show is about the biggest in the North-East and we try to make new additions every year.

“We do try to keep up with the times but we also want to be traditional; is is about getting the right blend.”

  • Admission to the show, at Stokesley Showground on Helmsley Road, is £12 for adults, £30 for a family of four.
  • It costs £8 for children aged five to 16 and under school age children are admitted for free.
