A TOWN is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its twinning with a French town.

Great Ayton is twinned with Ouzouer-sur-Loire, situated on the Loire river about 100 miles south of Paris. Every year people make the journey between the towns to spend a few days living with a host family.

Last year the French visited Great Ayton and this year will involve a trip to Ouzouer for members of Great Ayton Twinning Association (GATA).

There will be an opportunity for sightseeing, enjoying French food and wine and getting to know about daily life in France.

Dr John Nicholas, from the organisation, said: “After the vote for Brexit, it is perhaps more important than ever for people from different countries to understand each other.

“Being involved in twinning is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate that whatever the politics we can still be friends with our European neighbours.”

Although based in Great Ayton, membership of GATA is open to individuals, couples and families across North Yorkshire and Tees Valley. The association is keen to recruit new members including families with children.

The visit will take place over the August bank holiday weekend. The cost of the trip, which includes coach transport, ferry crossing, three nights’ accommodation and most meals is £170 for adults and £85 for children.
