A DOG found wandering the streets in Bosnia has a new lease of life following an operation in North Yorkshire.

Dotty was discovered as a three-month-old puppy by a couple who had gone out to Bosnia to help set up a rescue centre for stray dogs.

She had been born with a deformed leg and was not able to walk far, making it unlikely she would have survived for long on the streets.

With the help of fundraising from Kate Collier, in Pickering, Dotty was transported over to the UK, where she was vaccinated and neutered.

A local vet was found in Northallerton to operate on her leg last week and now she has a happy home with a family in Skipton, North Yorkshire, where she is said to be recovering well.

Dotty is one of many dogs which Kate Collier, from Pickering, has helped with her fundraising organisation, Jak’s Legacy, set up in memory of Jak, an elderly dog she rehomed.

Jak came to Kate as a rescue dog, abandoned by his previous owners at 16-years-old he was blind in one eye and deaf. He died two years later, at the age of 18, but in those two years he helped Kate raise thousands of pounds for local dog rescues.

During his brief time with Kate, Jak became a social media celebrity and was even asked to open a Christmas fair.

Updates and photographs on the characterful canine, resulted in him attracting more than 3,000 followers on Facebook.

A “world walk” held in Jak’s memory in January 2015 saw people take part in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Europe and the UK, raising £8,000 for 42 animal charities world-wide.

Kate said pictures of Jak and updates on his travels, including to his favourite wine bar in Pickering, resulted in many followers on Facebook, who have now helped form a worldwide network which supports dogs in need.

“I put a picture of Jak on Facebook and within an hour there were so many messages about him, that I thought he should have his own Facebook page,” said Kate.

“The last few months he couldn’t walk very well. He had been invited to open a Christmas fair at Masham. I said to them, “do you have a wheelbarrow, because he can’t walk very well?”

“But some of his supporters raised some money to get him a buggy which we could push him around in.”

Jak’s Legacy is currently raising money to help a young dog in Serbia, Boris, who had been hit by a car and as a result he also had a leg amputated. Kate has raised money to transport him over to the UK, where Kate feels it will be easier to find him a good home.

The next fundraising venture for Jak’s Legacy will be an auction at Spencer’s Bar and Grill off the A169 near Pickering, past Upper Carr Caravan Park on Saturday, May 5.

It will be opened by Dotty and her new owners at 5pm and there will also be a raffle and tombola.
