LORRIES are to be banned at a level crossing as part of an 18-month experimental scheme.
The ban for any vehicles over 7.5 tonnes at the crossing between Malton and Norton is designed to reduce congestion and improve air quality – particularly at Butcher Corner in Malton.
Signs will be erected in both towns, on the approaches to the level crossing and on the A64, along with directions for alternative routes.
Some work to put up the signs will be done at night when the trains are not running, with traffic management measures in place.
It is hoped eight bridge lighting columns on County Bridge will be replaced at the same time.
North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, said trading standards officers will monitor the ban’s effectiveness.
