A GROUP of Tibetan monks gathered at the gates of a fracking well site to carry out sacred chants.

The Dalai Lama’s Gyuto Monks travelled to Kirby Misperton in Ryedale to bless the land, water and local community as they visited the UK for a series of sacred music concerts.

The monks chant in a deep, harmonic overtone and have performed to large audiences across the world, including at Sydney Opera House.

On Wednesday they stood at the gates of Third Energy’s fracking well site and performed their chants as protesters looked on.

They arrived as Kirby Misperton Protection Camp marked its first year in existence. The camp was set up on land off the A169 just before Christmas last year, after campaigners lost a High Court challenge against North Yorkshire County Council’s decision to allow fracking to go ahead.

About a dozen protesters will mark Christmas Day in the camp this year.
