THE family of tragic Robert Stephenson say they have been overwhelmed by the support for a trust fund, set up in his memory, which has now raised more than £100,000.
The 21-year-old student from Pickering died after being struck by a taxi on a night out in York in March last year.
Robert, who was a rugby player with Malton and Norton Rugby Club and a cricketer with Thornton-le-Dale Cricket Club, was in the third year of an agriculture degree at Newcastle University when the incident happened.
His parents Patrick and Nicki, and elder brother Sam set up the Rob Stephenson Trust to help young people participate in sport.
Nicki said: "Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would reach this amount of money. Everyone has been fantastic in their response, from people who knew Rob as a baby to those who have only met him once or twice.
"People across the country and the world have taken to the idea of a family that is all about giving back to sport."
