FIREFIGHTERS are dwarfed by the scale of a huge fire at a landfill site.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue released this photo of the scene in Ryedale on Wednesday.

The blaze, in East Knapton, near Malton, involves a large amount of landfill, approximately 60 by 30 metres across and 20 metres deep.

Four fire engines were called to the blaze shortly after 5am today. The incident is ongoing.

At 11.30am the fire service tweeted: "Crews from Sherburn, Pickering and Malton are attending a fire at a landfill site in Knapton.

"Crews are using numerous main jets and respirators along with on-site machinery to expose and tackle the fire.

"Crews expected to be on site for some time."
