EFFORTS to save one of the region’s last remaining open air pools are being stepped up by campaigners who are swapping swimming caps for cycle shorts

The future of Helmsley’s open air pool looks bleak unless enough funding can be found to make vital renovations to the facility.

However, a group of passionate campaigners are determined to save the historic pool and have organised a 95-mile cycle to visit other lidos in Yorkshire.

The route will take in the open air pools at Ingleton and Ilkley and it is hoped that the ride will raise awareness of the Helmsley pool’s plight as well as the fundraising needs of Yorkshire’s other lidos.

Paul Goodwin from the ‘save the pool’ group said: “Cycling the lidos is a fantastic opportunity to see Yorkshire from a whole new perspective, and raise awareness and funds to help save our pool.

“We have arranged accommodation and hospitality along the route and have tailored packages for all abilities.

“What’s better than a cooling swim in a pool after a long bike ride?”

Helmsley’s pool is due to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019 and its team of dedicated volunteers want to see it stay open to celebrate this milestone and beyond, but as things stand it may well have to close at the end of this season.

But Chris Parkin, also part of the ‘save the pool’ working group, said at the moment it is business as usual with the pool opening in the beginning of June.

He said: “Our aim is to secure the funding over this time so that we can go to the pool’s trustees, Helmsley Town Council, to get the go-ahead to carry out the work needed, otherwise it will close down.”

The lido ride takes place on June 24 and 25 and cyclists are being encouraged to sign up and take part.
