THE Tour de Yorkshire trophy came steaming into Ryedale aboard the steam locomotive, Royal Scot, as it toured the region ahead of the cycle race.

The men’s and women’s Y shaped trophies are touring Yorkshire ahead of the start of the race on Friday, April 28, which will pass near the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s Grosmont station. Ahead of the race, it paid a visit to the railway’s engine sheds in Grosmont, where the steam locomotive Royal Scot was stationed.

The iconic locomotive is currently visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as it helps mark the 50th anniversary of the heritage rail’s charitable trust.

When Royal Scot was built in 1927, she was the first in a new breed of steam locomotives made for a fast passenger service from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow and had a top speed of 160 kilometres per hour.

Royal Scot was then rebuilt by British Railways in 1950 and went on to serve another 12 years in traffic on the West Coast Main Line before being retired in 1962.

The Royal Scot will be at the railway on Wednesday, March 29, Thursday, March 30 and then on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2.
