A CONSULTATION is being launched into exemptions from a scheme to ban lorries from using a busy level crossing in North Yorkshire.

An experimental traffic order is to be introduced to stop goods vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes from using the crossing in Norton, near Malton.

The restriction will reduce the number of large vehicles in the Castlegate area in order to improve the air quality.

Large vehicles are seen as the greater contributor to the pollutants being measured by Ryedale District Council and their removal from the area is seen as a key factor in helping to improve the situation.

The weight restriction will include standard exemptions for emergency service vehicles and highway maintenance vehicles.

However in addition, it is proposed that a permit system would operate that would exempt specified vehicles from the restriction to minimise any adverse effects on nearby local businesses.

The county’s executive member for highways, Cllr Don Mackenzie, said: “Public consultations have already revealed there is overwhelming support for a 7.5-tonne weight restriction on the grounds of improving air quality.

“This is a further consultation with residents, businesses and members of the public on the criteria for any exemptions to the restriction for local companies.”

Letters have now been sent out and comments should be submitted within 21 days.
