A STUDENT at at North Yorkshire school has won the Royal Horticultural Society Young School Gardener of the Year 2016.

Matthew Cossins, of Ryedale School at Nawton, near Helmsley, was one of four young people to reach the final of the competition. The 15-year-old, along with fellow pupils Joe Ferdinando and Charles Scaling, were nominated for their work in helping set up and maintain the school’s community garden.

The team also help to run the Green Welly Club which encourages students of all ages to develop their enthusiasm for horticulture and agriculture.

The judging team said: “Matthew is an exceptional gardener who leads by example and nurtures others. He is incredibly skilled and also dedicated.”

Headteacher Mark McCandless added: “Matthew achieved phenomenal success. He is a committed gardener and helps maintain the superb standard of our community garden as well as giving his time and support to lower school students.”
