A MONASTERY of Benedictine monks is set to stage high-level cycling races alongside an event showcasing local produce.

Ampleforth Abbey, near Thirsk, will host the 12th running of the British Cycling Elite Road Series men's and women's Ryedale Grand Prix on Sunday, between 9.30am and 4pm.

Race organisers said the women's race would see 87 riders competing over a 58.5-mile course through Ampleforth, Yearsley Moor, Oulston and Gilling East, while the men's event would be contested by 120 riders over a 93.3-mile route.

The Made in Ryedale event, in the abbey's grounds, will include chances for visitors to try produce from pastries to cider, meet artists and attend workshops and explore a recently-launched nature trail.

Entry is free. For details, call 01439-766000 or visit visitors.ampleforth.org.uk/made-in-ryedale
