A POPULAR open stables event could be in jeopardy - unless someone comes forward to help coordinate it.

Held in September, the annual open day at Malton, North Yorkshire, provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of some of the country’s leading race yards.

More than 20 trainers took part in last year's event with families and racing fans enjoying the activities and demonstrations.

The open day restarted in 2012 after running regularly ten years ago, raising funds for a number of good causes.

But trainer Tim Fitzgerald, who is also chairman of Malton Racing Association, said it would not go ahead this year unless someone could be found to organise it.

"Most of the things are in place, but we need someone to pull it all together," he said.

He said the event was good for the town, for charities and for community spirit and businesses as well as raising the profile of the stables.

"This is the third largest area for race horses in the country and we have a lot of very successful trainers,” he added.

“There are as many horses as there have ever been here and most of the stables are pretty full which is good."

Mr Fitzgerald said they were still hoping to find someone to co-ordinate the open stables event so it could go ahead in September.
