A NEW arts organisation is to stage a “winter performance adventure” on a woodland island in North Yorkshire.

Field Trip Arts, which specialises in outdoor theatre performances for families, is to bring a new production to Howsham Mill. The 18th century watermill stands on an island in the River Derwent near Malton and has been restored as an education centre and also generates renewable energy.

Escape to Derwent Island will involve taking audiences on a guided walk on to the woodland island, where they will meet explorers from far-away places, discover hidden wonders amongst the trees and encounter a variety of characters.

It will be Field Trip Arts’ first project in the region. The arts organisation was set up by Dominic Somers and Tanya Steinhauser, who have spent 15 years working in the arts. The couple, with two young children, recently relocated to Dominic’s home county of North Yorkshire. They aim to run high quality arts projects within rural communities, including outdoor theatre events that engage both adults and children.

They show includes warm drinks for the audience and runs over the weekend of February 27 and 28. Shows begin 12pm and 3pm. For tickets, £12 adults and £6 children, go to; www.fieldtriparts.com
