CASTLE Howard has attracted a record-breaking number of people through its doors – with more than a quarter of a million visitors in the past 12 months.

The historic home, situated between York and Malton, first opened its doors to the public 63 years ago and now thousands of visitors flock to the baroque-style home and landscaped estate every year.

Castle Howard’s marketing manager Rachel Underwood said over the last year they have seen a significant increase in international visitors, particularly from Asia.

She said: “But it’s not only tourists, locals are rediscovering our extensive gardens, adventure playground, woodland and wildlife as a perfect parkland to enjoy throughout the seasons; as well as visiting for events including our upcoming half term trail, flower festival and Christmas opening.

“Grounds-only tickets and sales of our annual pass are both up as residents make the most of having Castle Howard on their doorstep.”

Over half-term, from Saturday, February 13 to Sunday, February 21, children can enjoy the Big Bloomers trail and find giant flowers springing up among the early flowering daffodils and snowdrops. A prize is available to those who can spot them all.
