A NEW community hub aimed at people who are isolated and lonely has opened in North Yorkshire.

Organised by Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre, the Pickering facility aims to provide a safe, friendly and supportive environment for people of all ages and especially the older generation.

It will be open every Thursday, from 9am to 1pm at the WRVS on Hungate and will offer various activities including cooking, walking, games, a café and computer facilities.

There will also be a "Men in sheds" providing group work in woodwork, fishing and other pastimes.

Service manager Leisa Burniston said: “We are a user-led organisation and work closely with GPs and the community mental health teams to ensure that people who are affected by physical and mental health issues are supported.

“Our ultimate aim is to develop self-confidence, promote general well-being and improve work prospects. We are aim to prevent isolation, loneliness and help support positive family relationships.”
