AN annual football match in North Yorkshire will this year be raising funds in memory of a 20-year-old student who was killed in the summer.

Organisers of the Perm Cup, to be held on December 27 in Old Malton, have chosen to support the charity set up in memory of Liam Miller of Terrington.

He was stabbed to death by his friend Samuel Frederick Donley, who was jailed for six-and-a-half years last month after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

The charity Liam – which stands for laughter, inspiration, art, music – was set up with the support of Liam's dad Pete, brother Jamie and sister Natalie, to help underprivileged youngsters and has so far raised nearly £9,000.

Team captain James Milson, who organises the Perm Cup with friend Paul Holder, said: "We have raised money for lots of different charities including the Stroke Association and Cancer Research," he said.

"This will be the ninth event and we were looking for ideas for this year when it was suggested we do something for Liam's charity.

"I know Liam's family and we felt this was a worthy charity to support. We hope it will be a good community day and attract lots of support from local people."

Liam’s sister Natalie said: "We are really, really pleased that James and Paul have decided to hold this year's football match for us.

"The charity has been a great focus for dad and people are being so supportive in different ways - it has been quite overwhelming."

The match, sponsored by Hunters estate agents, will kick off at noon and be followed by a charity auction and raffle. A disco and karaoke will start at 5.30pm followed by live music from 8pm.
