CYCLISTS are being invited to get on their bikes to help people suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

A one-day event, Pedal for Parkinson’s, is to be staged at Ripley Castle, near Harrogate, on July 5 from 9am.

Cyclists can choose from 20, 42 or 60-mile routes through the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, following some of the Tour de France Grand Depart route.

Dave Usherwood, 48, from Pickering, was diagnosed with the illness five years ago. He took part in a similar event last year and is now preparing to take on the challenge again.

“The most enjoyable feeling about taking part last year was a sense of being equal to everyone on the ride,” he said.

“Once we got on our bikes the sense of camaraderie was fantastic. It didn’t feel like a competitive event which was a bonus.”

He added: “It was great to see my wife and eight-year-old son greet me at the finish line with hugs and a round of applause.”

The entry fee is £20 for adults or £10 for 11 to 15 year olds on the 20-mile route only. All cyclists will receive an exclusive Pedal for Parkinson’s finisher’s medal.
