MORE than 30,000 snowdrops planted last year have sprung to life to give the first hint of spring at an historic home in North Yorkshire.
The tens of thousands of snowdrop bulbs were planted in the gardens at Castle Howard, near Malton, last autumn and have created a carpet of white throughout the grounds.
The bulbs are a mix of Galanthus woronowii, a shorter snowdrop with broader leaves and large pearl drop flowers and the more common species of the flower, Galanthus nivalis.
Children visiting the grounds of the country house tomorrow (Friday, February 20) and over the weekend will be able to explore the gardens on a hearts and flowers trail and find giant snowdrops hidden in the grounds.
