A NEW version of a 20th-century theatre classic is now being filmed in North Yorkshire.

A BBC adaptation of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls is currently in production for screening later this year.

Stars of the drama are expected to be at Scampston Hall, near Malton, for the next month before the production team moves to various locations in Malton, including the former Green Man Hotel.

David Thewlis, who played Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter movies, will play the Inspector, and also appearing are Ken Stott, star of TV’s Rebus, and Miranda Richardson, seen recently in Mapp and Lucia.

Directed by Aisling Walsh, the story is set in 1912 when, following the suicide of a young woman, an inspector calls unexpectedly to interrogate the wealthy Birling family.

As their world unravels, each member of the family is revealed to have unwittingly played a part in her demise.

Producer Greg Brenman said: “It’s an incredible honour to be working with such a dream cast and director on this timeless classic, revered by generations all over the world.”

Lucy Richer, commissioning editor for BBC drama, said: “The mysterious and elusive Inspector Goole has fascinated audiences for generations and David Thewlis is the perfect actor to bring him to life.

“We’re delighted that he, Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson are heading up this stellar cast to bring one of the nation’s favourite stories to BBC One.”
