A LITTLE piece of history will come to an end this weekend in a ceremony at York Minster.

The chairman of the Ryedale and Scarborough branch of the British Korean Veterans’ Association, Ken Keld, will lay up their national standard at the cathedral on Sunday.

The association was founded more than 30 years ago, but with surviving members all getting on in years, the group decided to disband last year.

National chairman Colonel George Gadd said: “Once we’ve laid up our standard, we’ll be finished. I’m one of the youngest and I’m 81.

“It’s a natural progression for the standard, it was dedicated at York Minster and it’s going to be laid up at York Minster.”

Association president Major-General Mike Swindells said: “We decided the best thing was to go out with dignity and lay the standard at the Minster.”

After the service on January 18, the British Korean Veterans’ Association will disband for good, although local branches will still be free to hold events for their members.

The laying of the national standard will take place at 11.30am and is open to all members of the public.
