A CHARITY is looking for singers and musicians to join a group being formed to help people with dementia.

Dementia Foward, which provides support, home visits, wellbeing activities, social events and education programmes, across North Yorkshire said it was launching a Singing For Fun group for people who have lost the ability to communicate by other means, to stimulate their brains in a fun way.

It will hold sessions in Pickering after being approached by retired architect Fred Mynot, who asked for help setting up a group in the town.

Mr Mynot, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease nine years ago, said: “It’s now accepted that singing with a group of people can greatly lift the spirits and help people maintain their wellbeing."

The 81-year-old has remained active following his dementia diagnosis and has written a guide to help other people with dementia remain active and create routines.

He said: "Singing For Fun groups offer an experience that can be shared and enjoyed by people living with dementia, their carers and volunteers, no singing experience is necessary.

“Anyone who would like to come along to sing is more than welcome, and we’re urgently looking for volunteers who can play instruments such as piano, keyboard or guitar."

The group will meet on Monday mornings at the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, Pickering, from April 13.
