A MAN was killed when his moped was in collision with a car in North Yorkshire today (December 23).

The 21-year-old was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after the smash at 7.50am near Malton.

But after his arrival at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough he was pronounced dead.

The collision involved the moped and a dark-coloured Mitsubishi Chamonix people carrier. It happened on the A64 at West Knapton, near the junction with the B1258.

The moped rider was a local man and although his family have been informed police are not yet in a position to release his name.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward with information.

In particular, the police are trying to trace the driver of a car who was travelling behind the moped before turning off towards Yedingham.

The driver of the car may be unaware that the collision occurred but may hold vital information that can help the police with their enquiries.

Anyone who saw either the moped or the Mitsubishi prior to the collision is also urged to contact the police.
