A GENEROUS pub landlady has raised £740 to repair a church roof.

Sophie Heartfield, landlady of the Crown Inn in Grewelthorpe, near Masham, hosted a Burns Night supper on Friday, January 25.

She decided to organise the event after hearing that St James and The Methodist Church in the village needed money to repair its roof.

She decorated the pub with tartan to give it a traditional Scottish theme, and served a three-course meal to 40 people which was followed by a whisky toast.

As the village is only a few miles from Masham and Ripon, there has been much support for roof repairs.

The Bishop Pipers provided the music, and there was a bingo, quiz and raffle to add to the money already raised.

She presented a cheque to the treasurer of the church in the Crown Inn.

A spokesperson said: “On behalf of St James and the Methodist Church thank you very much to Sophie and her husband Kevin for a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening which boosted church funds.”
