HUNDREDS of cyclists took to the roads to raise thousands of pounds for charity in a popular annual bike ride.

For the first time in its 11-year history, the Ripon Rotary Club took over the organising of a 100k cycle ride formerly known as the Acorn Bike Ride.

The circular route, which starts at finishes at Bishop Monkton, was enjoyed by 569 riders who raised £39,000 for Dementia Forward and Scleroderma Research.

Event co-ordinator Chris Eyes said the atmosphere was “fantastic” and a date of May 12 has already been set for the ride next year.

He said: “This is the first time we organised it and we are thrilled with the response.

“I must say the feedback we have had from the riders has been fantastic, with them all saying they are coming back to do it again next year.”

Mr Eyes added that money is still being collected and may top £40,000.
