UP to 300 jobs could be created at a new motorway service area by the A1(M), in plans expected to generate controversy.

Operators Applegreen wants to create the 383-parking space area near Kirby Hill, north of Boroughbridge, and aims to submit a planning application later his year.

Previous proposals to build a service station at Kirby Hill, north of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire have faced opposition from campaign group Residents Against Motorway Services.

The latest design locates all buildings and parking areas on the western side of the motorway - away from the village - and meets Government guidance to provide rest areas at least every 28 miles. The distance between services and the next full service area at Durham is 53 miles.

Applegreen is proposing a design reducing the visibility of the scheme with the main building and main fuel filling station sitting under a single sweeping green roof.

Ground levels within the site will be reduced and hedgerows retained as part of a landscape scheme that respects the character of the local area.

Consultation events will be held on April 27 and 28 at the Best Western Crown Hotel, Boroughbridge, from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.
