WESTMINSTER MPs enjoyed a taste of North Yorkshire after a Melmerby-brewed beer was chosen to be served at a parliamentary bar.

Toast ale, brewed by Hambleton Ales near Ripon, was nominated by MPs to have their beer available on tap in Strangers’ Bar because of the team’s philanthropic work.

The ale is brewed with fresh, surplus bread that would otherwise be wasted and all profits go to the charity Feedback to support the fight against food waste.

There is around one slice of surplus bread in each pint.

The ale was available at Stranger’s Bar for a week after a firkin - 72 pints’ worth - was specially delivered.

Ripon MP Julian Smith met the team behind the brew at the MPs’ bar in Parliament, along with Graham Evans MP, the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group.

Mr Smith said: “I was very impressed by what the team from Toast Ale are doing to fight food waste.

“It is great to be able to support a fantastic charitable project like this and to also support one of our local brewers, Hambleton Ales.”
