A DEBATE in advance of the EU referendum is to be held at Ripon Cathedral next month.

The free debate, on June 9 at 7.30pm, is part of a series Reimagining Europe events that are taking place in a number of English cathedrals over the next few weeks.

Dean John Dobson said: “It is important that Christians engage in a mature and considered way in the debate about this country’s future in relation to the European Union.

“I am delighted that we are able to offer this opportunity to explore key questions that impact on the well-being of this nation just two weeks before the referendum.”

The event will begin with Lord Wallace of Saltaire - foreign affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords - giving a keynote address.

The purpose of his presentation is to open up areas for discussion, not to argue for remaining in or leaving the EU.

The Bishop of Leeds, the Right Reverend Nick Baines, will provide further theological reflection on the discussion and debate.

The event is free, without any need for a ticket, and all are welcome.
