DEFENCE chiefs have met with an MP, council bosses, business leaders and residents to discuss the future of two barracks sites which are to close next year.

Ripon and Skipton MP Julian Smith said the summit in Ripon heard the Ministry of Defence would be working on delivering a sustainable solution which would make full use of the Claro and Deverell Barracks sites in Ripon.

The government announced the closures in 2013 and its intention to move 21 Engineers Regiment to Catterick Garrison in 2017, in a £240 million-a-year cost-cutting drive designed to pave the way for the return of 15,500 British troops based in Germany.

When questioned at the meeting, James Ryley, of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation said he remained unable to give a timescale for selling the sites, but added it was aimed the sales would provide value for money for the taxpayer.

Council leaders spoke about Ripon’s need for affordable housing and the opportunities the sites presented to the area, including opportunities for new sports facilities, while Ripon City Plan members highlighted possible improvements to the city’s transport network.

Councillors have previously said they would like to see large amounts of housing on the site, to raise the city's population to 20,000 and make it a more attractive location for businesses.

Mr Smith said: "The purpose of the summit was to initiate a dialogue between the many groups and organisations working in Ripon and I look forward to seeing plans for these sites progress in consultation with residents and businesses."
