A NEW book on one of North Yorkshire’s leading historic attractions has been launched, along with a plan on how to preserve it for future generations.

National Trust archaeologist Mark Newman has launched a book on Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, near Ripon.

It brings social and garden history together with archaeology to reveal how the estate is a treasured artistic creation, as well as a ruined medieval monastery.

The Wonder of the North was launched at Fountains Abbey today (Wednesday, February 10), along with a new plan which will set out how the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey will be looked after.

It became a World Heritage Site in 1986 and must have a management plan which is reviewed every six years. The plan is created following extensive consultation with the wider community.

It has now been approved by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and submitted to UNESCO for its consideration.

The plan highlights what is special about the historic North Yorkshire estate and how to maintain these aspects, as well as key issues which could affect it, such as flooding.
