A GROUP of museums has unveiled a series of activities to offer children a glimpse of everyday life in the past.

Ripon Museums, which include a former workhouse, a Georgian courthouse and a former prison and police station, will stage an event for each week of the summer holidays, ranging from from traditional games and herbal cures to Victorian baking and justice.

Visitors will be invited to try croquet and hoopla on the lawn, handle original Victorian toys, make a marionette and listen to spooky toy stories as part of the Toy Stories week at the Workhouse Museum, from Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24, from 11am to 3pm.

The following week, the museum will see baking on the Tramp Major's cooking range, decorating biscuits made to a Victorian recipe and the chance to handle 19th Century cookery equipment.

The Queen of Hearts will take over the Courthouse Museum from August 3 for mock trials based on Alice in Wonderland Come, where visitors will be invited to play the Knave of Hearts and be accused of stealing tarts, alongside craft and storytelling sessions.

The cost of most activities will be included in museum entry.
