A MUSUEM and restaurant have joined forces to hold a pop-up eatery this July using heritage food from the museum gardens.

Ripon’s Workhouse Museum (WHM) provides a range of produce to Lockwoods restaurant, including Fat Lazy Blonde lettuce, Duke of York potatoes, Dog’s Snout apples, and Victoria and Prince Albert varieties of rhubarb from its carefully restored garden.

During July the WHM will supply the majority of its produce to Lockwoods and the restaurant’s dish of the day will incorporate heritage produce, from Tuesday, July 21to August 1.

Lockwoods will celebrate with a Heritage Food Festival, where diners can enjoy all the produce typically grown when the WHM housed poverty stricken locals back in 1890.

On Saturday, July 25, Lockwoods and the WHM will hold a special pop up dinner when Lockwood’s owner and chef, Matthew Lockwood, will be cooking a three-course dinner and talking to guests about the types of fruit, vegetables and herbs he will use.

Mr Lockwood said: “A few years ago I started thinking about trying to find a plot of urban land on which to grow fruit and vegetables to supply Lockwoods.

“However, in chatting to one of the WHM volunteers one evening at the restaurant, we struck up a partnership to promote the gardens and their heritage produce.

“Since then the WHM gardens have received Lottery funding and extended and improved the site, offering not just a area for growing all the fresh fruit, salad, vegetables and herbs, but a wild flower garden for insects too.”
