A MUSEUM is to to celebrate Alice In Wonderland author Lewis Carroll's links to a city with a Mad Hatter's Garden Fete.

The event, at Ripon Workhouse Museum, on Sunday, June 28, from 11.30am to 3pm, is being held to mark the 150th anniversary of the popular book, as the author took inspiration for it while visiting his father who was Canon of Ripon Cathedral.

It is thought that the daughter of a local resident inspired the character of Alice.

The event will feature Punch and Judy, live music, garden games including flamingo croquet and hoopla, a coconut shy, a fancy-dress contest, puppet-making, and the stocks.

The museum, which is one of the UK’s best-preserved workhouse sites with a restored Victorian kitchen garden, will be open for free.

Head gardener Nick Thompson said: “I am looking forward to talking about the heritage vegetables that we grow here as well as showing off our wild flower meadow.

"The garden is a real hidden gem of Ripon, completely managed by volunteers.

"Anyone interested in lending a couple of hours can contact us at the museum”.
