MILITARY engineers will showcase their skills in a city centre as part of a weekend of celebrations.

Soldiers from 21 Engineer Regiment, based at Claro Barracks, Ripon, will mark the 66th anniversary of the Freedom of Ripon being granted to the Corps of Royal Engineers, by staging displays in the Market Place on Saturday (May 23).

Earlier this year, following calls to retain the regiment in the city, the Government confirmed the soldiers would relocate to Catterick Garrison after 2016.

The displays will include two 30-tonne Terrier – a multi-terrain armoured digger – two weapons mounted installation kit Land Rovers and two quad bikes.

It will also have a combat engineer stand, a construction/artisan trade skills stand, a dive tank and a weapons demonstration which is expected to include an AK-47, AK74, a Dragonov sniper rifle and a DShk-Funker530.

On Sunday (May 24), the regiment will march to Ripon Cathedral for a Service of Installation at 11.15am.

After this service, the regiment will exercise its Freedom of Ripon by forming up at 12.15pm and marching through the streets of the city, passing Ripon Town Hall about 12.30pm.
