A BEER fan has cycled away with a bespoke bicycle after winning a prize draw to commemorate the Tour de France.

Jason Brant, from Upper Poppleton, near York, won a contest with the Masham-based Black Sheep Brewery to win a top-of-the-range Giant Defy 1 bike.

The brewery launched the contest to coincide with creation of Velo, an ale specially made to mark the Grand Depart.

The ale became the brewery's most popular ever seasonal beer and is now been made a permanent part of its bottled beer range.

The bike, donated by specialist bike shop, Moonglu, in Ripon, was made to measure for Mr Brant and presented by the brewery’s managing director Rob Theakston.

Mr Theakston said they will be bringing the cask ale version of Velo back to pubs in 2015 to mark the Tour de Yorkshire.

The Tour de Yorkshire will be held on May 1 to May 3 and will involve the participation of top international teams. Full details of the route are due to be released on January 21.

“The Tour de France coming to Yorkshire was one of the biggest events ever to hit the region and reports say that it has been worth more than £100m to the local economy, with more to come,” said Mr Theakston.

“We decided to go all out to celebrate Le Grand Depart, and we still haven’t stopped.”
