STAFF at an opticians donned their aprons and swapped their lenses for rolling pins as part of a World Sight Day Challenge.

The team from Scrivens Opticians and Hearing Care in Ripon created a colourful feast of homemade cupcakes, muffins, cookies and other sweet treats to sell to delighted customers at the branch.

The venture raised money for the World Sight Day challenge, which provides eye examinations and glasses to those around the world living in poverty.

Sophie Muller, branch manager, said: “We wanted to do something different and fun to support the World Sight Day Challenge, which is an initiative that transforms the lives of people.

“Just £3 can be enough to help provide an eye exam and a pair of glasses to those who don’t usually have access to such facilities.”

The branch on The Arcade has also been running a baking-themed raffle and donated £1 from every sight test. All the funds raised go towards helping the 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired because they do not have access to local eye care.

Now in its 7th year, the World Sight Day Challenge is the largest annual fundraising campaign run by global charity, Optometry Giving Sight.

Last year Scrivens Opticians raised more than £3,000 for Optometry Giving Sight, which was enough money to provide 1,067 eye examinations and glasses.
