FAMILIES are encouraged to pick up artefacts from the First World War at a museum this summer, for a poignant insight into the day-to-day reality of war.
Every Tuesday in August visitors to Ripon Workhouse Museum can handle genuine wartime objects as part of the museum’s Great War theme.
Museum volunteers will be on hand to help people explore some of the stories behind the objects.
Volunteer co-ordinator Wendy Hunwick-Brown said: “It’s a chance to explore some objections from the war; to let people experience real things from the time. We have some photographs, postcards, a nurse’s apron; a whole range of items that people can touch and hold.
“There’s also an opportunity for people to stop and consider what life was like for those back at home as well as those who were fighting.”
The museum is also running other activities related to traditional crafts used during the war years, included rag rug-making. Visitors can also create a rug in the shape of a poppy.
The wartime object handling sessions run from 2.30pm until 4pm every Tuesday during the summer holidays.
