THE Home Office has been given the go-head to erect two telecommunication masts in the Yorkshire Dales.

The masts, in Upper Swaledale and and nearby Birkdale, are part of the major national upgrade of the emergency services’ communications network.

The mast in Upper Swaledale, near Crow Trees Farm, will be a lattice mast, making it capable of hosting several commercial mobile phone operators in addition to the emergency services.

However, it will be up to the mobile phone companies to decide whether or not to use the infrastructure to bring 4G coverage to their customers.

The mast on Birkdale Common will be a telegraph pole capable of hosting one commercial operator.

Five Home Office applications for masts in the Yorkshire Dales National Park have now been approved. Last month, planners recieved a sixth for a 15-metre lattice mast to be erected at Braidley in Coverdale,
