THE work by local communities in seeing the Tour de Yorkshire pass safely through Hambleton has been officially recognised.

Over the past few years six towns and villages have been presented with commemorative plaques – and for 2018 another four received them.

The district council added Crakehall, Bedale, Morton-on-Swale and Romanby to the list of recipients – which already contains Great Ayton, Stokesley, Northallerton, Thirsk, Sutton Bank and West Tanfield.

The 2018 Tour was bigger than ever before, with an estimated 2.6m people lining the route during the four day event - and 650,000 of them out on day three when the race passed through Hambleton.

"These communities surpassed themselves this year with their decorative ideas and involvement of the local children. The plaques will provide a lasting memento," said Cllr Bridget Fortune, Hambleton's portfolio holder for leisure and the environment.
