A VOLUNTEER-run festival will make a welcome return in 2018 after it was cancelled for the first time in almost two decades.

Organisers of Richmond Live, a two-day music extravaganza, have confirmed the event will return to the scenic surroundings of Richmond Batts.

The event, which attracted hundreds of thousands of people over the last 18-years, faced a last-minute cancellation this summer.

Mike Jinks, Richmond Live committee chairman, said: “On behalf of the entire Richmond Live committee and crew, I’d like to thank the people of Richmond and our loyal followers for their patience during our fallow year.

“We are all rested, refreshed and excited to be back. We are planning a show that will be bigger and better than ever.”

The Richmond Batts area forms a natural tree-lined auditorium on one side by the River-Swale.

Artists who have performed at the event include From the Jam, the Bootleg Beatles and numerous local bands and musicians.

Escapologist Chris Cross has made an appearance as well as The South, Marillion and Bad Manners.

Councillor Stuart Parsons, Richmond mayor, said: “The festival has great benefits for the town as it provides an amazing event at a stunning venue on a weekend at the height of summer.

“Richmond businesses get more trade with people needing somewhere to stay, eat and shop.

“I have seen the event grow massively over the years so it can only be good news.”

The event was cancelled this year despite a date in August having been previously confirmed, and administrators of the event’s Facebook page reassuring people that the event was “definitely” happening.

Some festival-goers said on social media that they had already paid their deposits for accommodation.

The festival is backed by the Richmondshire District and Town Councils, as it brings much business to the town and major event supporters include Star Radio and Newsquest.

Local supporters include Swale Scaffolding, Purple Creative Services and North-East Scouts Communication Team.

It will be held on August 3 and 4 and the line-up will be announced next year.

Advanced tickets will be available from £10 for the weekend.

Tickets can be bought from the gate at £5 for Friday and £10 for Saturday.
