AN OLD well is the defining feature in a new upmarket gift shop near the centre of a market town.
No.19 Richmond, which opened on Saturday, has seen flocks of people coming for a glance at the old stone well that sits above the River Swale.
Owners Barbara and Jon Overfield have transformed what was a grade II listed one-bedroom flat into a retail unit.
The building was granted planning permission earlier this year after many objections from neighbours.
The well is four-foot-deep and has been renovated using glass, framing and lights.
Barbara said: “This year has been complete bedlam and over the last four months it has been nothing but renovation.
“We think the shop is in keeping with the history of the building as we have kept the wooden flooring and have filled it with old fashioned furniture.”
