AN 18th century suit of armour owned by the last family to rule Japan and clubs made to deliver fatal blows are set to be auctioned on September 29.

Tennants Auctioneers, in Leyburn, is selling a private collection of arms and armour from around the world in an exhibition of militaria and ethnographica.

The Tokugawa shogunate suit of armour is estimated to make anywhere between £4,000 and £6,000.

Other artefacts on sale include a collection of 19th century Fijian Gatawaka clubs.

To gain Koroi - killer - status in Fiji, warriors would stab a prisoner with a spear before killing them with a blow to the head with a club.

The number of kills made with a club was shown by either the number of slashes or small holes in the shaft, or by sticking a tooth from each victim into the club’s head.

The auction will be held on September 29 and the full catalogue will be available at tennants.co.uk
