A CASTLE in the Dales will see England’s festival of medieval music enter its gates for a second year.

Medieval Music in the Dales, held in and around Bolton Castle in Wensleydale, will feature a tavern, market and a range of concerts from musicians from the UK, France and Spain.

This year’s theme is ‘Spain Comes to Yorkshire’, with all concerts focusing on Spanish medieval music.

Stages will be located around the castle, with bagpipes and shawms in the courtyard along with performances in the tavern and Queen Mary's chamber.

Spanish musician Cristiana Elis Raurich is bringing her 13th century portative organ to the castle, where she will perform for the first time in the UK.

The festival is run by Richmond-based medieval musicians Gill Page and Paul Leigh who make up the band Trouvere.

Ms Page said: “It’s a labour of love for us. It's something we've wanted to do for ages, and we run it on a voluntary basis.

“It's hard work but totally worth it when all the musicians and medieval enthusiasts are all gathered together and the castle comes alive with music."

Medieval Music in the Dales is also taking part in the Heritage Open Days weekend, meaning there is free entry to the courtyard at the castle throughout the festival.

Gates open at 1pm on Friday, September 8, and events will take place all weekend.

Normal admission rates apply to the rest of the castle and gardens.
