HIGHWAYS England have moved to quash rumours that the wrong type of hardcore has been laid on a section of the upgraded A1.

The Northern Echo had received reports that hardcore laid on a section of road near Scotch Corner was found to be unstable but a spokeswoman from the agency said the team behind the work had "no idea" where those rumours had come from.

Signs have recently gone up on the road informing motorists that the section of road remains closed for technology reasons.

A spokeswoman for Highways England explained: "We had a few calls from people saying that the road looks finished so why can't we drive on it.

"So we put them up because we are still carrying out testing of overhead lines and gantries and we can't reopen the road until that has been done."
