A TOWN’S very own secret garden has been saved from closure following a successful campaign by residents.

Almost 400 people signed a petition against Richmondshire District Council’s proposal to sell the old gasholder garden for development.

The secluded garden, that once housed one of Richmond’s two gasholders, is located close to the River Swale waterfalls. It is often overlooked by visitors but for those who know it, the garden is a popular place for picnics. News of its potential closure was described as a threat to the “integrity of Richmond’s open spaces.”

The council’s decision not to sell has been welcomed by residents, and the town’s two district councillors, Stuart Parsons and Linda Curran, who are now seeking volunteers to help them tidy up the garden.

Colin Dales, corporate director at Richmondshire District Council, thanked everyone who had engaged in the consultation, adding: “We value resident feedback highly.”
