A FORMER Royal Navy map maker has swapped the sub-zero temperatures of the Antarctic for a placement at a Richmond charity while he re-trains.

Liam Brew, from Darlington, recently joined Richmond-based charity Just the Job on placement as part of his occupational therapist degree course at Teesside University.

The 29-year-old, from Darlington, previously travelled the word with the Royal Navy, spending his last two years as a hydrographer aboard the survey vessel HMS Protector.

He said: “I did two world tours and then a long stint with British Antarctic Surveys liaising with scientists from countries including Chile, Russia, Germany and the United States.

“Seals and penguins were an everyday sight and we had to keep a very careful watch on the whales, including orcas, humpback and sperm. It was quite an experience.”

He says that his placement with Just the Job, which helps adults with disabilities carry out work such as gardening and logging, is “an occupation therapist’s dream”.
