BEDALE’s annual bonfire, which regularly attracts more than 7,000 people, is once again being held on November 5.

Organisers say the firework display will be as impressive as ever, timed to music, but they are scaling back the bonfire itself because of concerns over fire cover.

The event gets underway at 6.15pm when the bonfire is lit followed by the fireworks themselves at 7pm.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have pledged to ensure the event is covered, but organisers say they have “grave concerns” over the limitations because of reduced cover from fire crews as a result of regional cutbacks.

A spokesman said: “We would be grateful if you could let it be known that as a result of our concern over public safety our bonfire will be smaller this year.

“As most towns in the area will be holding their celebrations on the same night, which is unusual, we are taking this step to safeguard the public.

“We have been assured by the fire service that they will ensure cover but we do have concerns.”
